How to Catch Don Eduardo

Mark Graham walked out of his front door, onto the patio of the house he'd grown up in. He smiled, looking around at the spring scenery lit by the early morning sun. After stretching, he sat on the top step, gazing fondly at his recently repaired car. Though the incident in which it had been damaged had certainly been bizarre, the damage wasn't severe, and had been repaired quickly. Hearing the screen door bang close behind him, he turned to see his younger sister Dana, her long blond hair pulled up into two pigtails, carrying a box of items from the kitchen. "Morning, Dana... What are you doing with that stuff? Mom's gonna kill you if she sees you have one of her canning jars outside."

Dana looked at her brother as if she was surprised by his presence on the patio. "I.. err, that is.. I was just going to try something.. I just want to catch her... even for just a little. I thought it would be funny!"

Depspite the cold lump of suspicion settling into his spine, Mark queries his sister on who exactly it is that she plans to catch, and why it would be funny. His fears confimed, she chirps up at him "I want to catch her. You know... Don Eduardo. I think it would be funny to see if I could manage it, that's all. I have an idea, I saw it on TV, it worked with monkeys!"

"Ok, ok. I get the idea. Go ahead and do whatever you want, but don't say I didn't warn you. I don't think trapping that girl is a good idea. She's been acting strange since her accident. You saw what she did to my car." Mark sighed, and sat down on the steps, his curiousity at his sister's plan outweighing the concern for his own safety.

Dana set her box on the lawn, and began to pull out objects. The plan was simple, it seemed. She took a canning jar, put several rings of super glue around the bottom, and pressed it firmly onto the sidewalk. Once she was satisfied that it was affixed, she took a few gold colored plastic disks and dropped them into the jar. "Hey, aren't those the coins from my pirate game?" Mark asked, starting to get annoyed. "Also, why DID you glue mom's jar to the sidewalk? You'll be lucky if you don't end up grounded for that!"

"SSHHH! Don't make noise, you'll scare her off!" Dana glared at her older brother, silencing his protests. "Besides, you know you want to see if this works. I can tell." Satisfied with her trap, the little girl sat on the porch next to her brother, and the two waited.

It didn't take long. A rustling noise in the hedge that seperated their yard from the neighbors was the first indication that something was happening. From the top of the hedge, a plank with a crudely drawn face poked out, and rotated several times, as though it were a periscope. "Studly! Do you see anything? Is it safe to come out now?"

Studly the board did not answer, but it seemed his silence was taken for a positive assessment of the situation, as a hand slowly crept out from under the hedge. The hand, clad in a white sleeve, was followed by its partner, and then by a head. Shining red hair reflected the light, and a band of orange construction tape adorned the forehead. It was boldly emblazoned with the word "CAUTION", and it was all Mark could do to refrain from grabbing Dana, and running inside to lock the doors.

Finally, the girl was completely free of the hedge. Legally known as Sarah Thorne, she had grown up next door to Mark and Dana. She had been such a nice girl, at least until the accident. Remembering the destruction on his new car, Mark shuddered. What if she took her plank of vengeance to something else next, like his head? For the moment, though, she seemed oblivious to their presence, as she crept along the lawn towards the jar. Upon reaching her target, the girl lifted her head, looked around. Once satisfied, she gazed into the jar, and her eyes grew wide... "OOOOOOHHH!!" She squealed loudly. "DOUBLOONS!!!! Do not worry, my imprisoned lovelies! Don Eduardo shall free you, oh yes...."

The girl lifted her hand above her head, and dramatically plunged it into the jar, her fingers closing around the fake coins. "You are mine now! Come to Don Eduardo!" She cried, and tried to pull her hand from the jar. It was then that Mark saw the genious of his sister's plan. With her fist around the coins, the girl would not be able to remove her hand from the jar. As the jar was fused to the sidewalk, she was now stuck until she decided to release the coins. Unfortunately for the trapped Don Eduardo, she was unwilling to release her prize.

The trapped girl began to flail, her cries of irritation bringing the other residents of the street to their windows, and Dana to hysterics. "Honestly, how long do you think this will last?" Mark whispered to his sister, who was laughing to hard to reply.

After nearly 20 minutes of tears, curses and pointless flailing, Don Eduardo released the coins, and her hand slid out of the jar. Looking at her hand, then the jar, she slid her hand back in, made a fist, and tugged. Being stuck as firmly as before, she relaxed her hand, and it slid out easily. The girl stood up, ran to the hedge where her plank had been left as a sort of silent watchman, and tugged it free. Running back to the jar, she smashed it apart with her weapon, snatched up the coins, and ran down the street, cackling like an angry hen. Mark shook his head, and looked at his sister. "You better get that mess cleaned up before Mom comes out here. Oh, and you owe me a new set of counters."

Shaking his head, Mark walked across the yard, avoiding the broken remains of the jar, got into his new car, and drove to work.
